Weiss Lake Guides Fishing Report

Updated...August 30, 2014

CRAPPIE: The hot and humid "Dog Days of Summer" are here but that will be soon changing as the 2014 fall crappie season on Weiss Lake is about to get underway! The hot temperatures here in Alabama have made the crappie fishing slow. We have been able to catch a few off some deep brush on the flats as well as the channel ledges but it has to be early in the morning or late in the evening. The crappie are holding tight to the brush and the bite has been really light. This will continue for the next several weeks but it will start to change as the weather starts to cool around the first part of October. The fall fishing on Weiss Lake is great and runs from October into December. During the fall season, you can usually catch the fish using two different methods. In the early part of the season as the water first starts cooling you can catch them shooting docks. As the weather and water temperature really drops the fish will move out on the river channel ledges where you can catch them spider-rigging with live bait. The key to catching them along the ledges in the fall is good electronics! Use your electronics to locate the stumps and brush located on the ledges and that is where you will find the crappie. Now is actually a great time to be scouting out some new areas to fish during the fall. Spend some time on the water checking those ledges and marking the brush piles now and it will save you some time this fall when your on the water. The fall season is about to start and we are booking up fast but we still have a few dates open. Give me a call today to get your dates reserved! Also during the fall season use caution on the lake due to the lower water levels. Alabama Power will be dropping the lake level and by the time we get into December it will be -  feet low. We will be out on the water battling the heat and trying to catch a few crappie over the next few weeks and I hope to have a better report coming up soon. Remember there is a 10 inch size limit on crappie on Weiss Lake and the daily creel limit is 30 per person, per day!  See Ya' on the Water!
